Funny how after four months this ended up back in this very simple form...
I asked my friend Rae how she was on a sunny day. Her response, "no tears today," made an impression on me. I knew I had to write the song.
The words and the idea circled around my brain for months. Shit happened. I imagined other shit happening. And the rest of the lyrics started coming to me.
Mostly I compose on piano but I was trying out alternate tunings on guitar. Waking up every morning with the ideas about this song and a new weapon in my songwriting arsenal this song started to take shape.
Originally the music was at maybe half the tempo of this final version. Interim versions included cello, violin, mandolin, banjo and piano. I even arranged haunting harmonies for the chorus.
I'm not sure what inspired me to just play the music faster. But, I did. I completely started over with the production. Tracked guitar and voice then added two more vocals. Didn't really do much in mixing it (don't have to when it's this simple.)
I knew this was the song that was really meant to be from the moment Rae inspired me with those words....
